Fabric consumption calculator for T-shirts and knit tops
Estimate how much knit fabric a T-shirt, sweatshirt or other top needs, using the formula most knit factories quote with. Use it for budgets and to check a factory's quote; the factory's marker gives the final number.
Fabric needed (estimate)
- Per piece
- 0.238 kg · 0.73 m
- Per dozen
- 2.855 kg
- Whole order
- 71.4 kg · 220.3 m
Includes 8% wastage. The factory's marker gives the final consumption.
Questions
- Which formula does this use?
- Kilograms per dozen = (body length + sleeve length + 2 × allowance) × (half chest + allowance) × 2 × GSM × 12 ÷ 10,000,000, with all lengths in centimetres. Wastage is added on top.
- How much wastage should I add?
- Around 5–10% for plain tops in solid colours. Stripes, prints that must match, and small orders need more.
- Does it work for woven shirts?
- No. Woven fabric is bought in metres and depends on the marker layout. Ask your factory for a marker-based consumption.
