What a factory needs for a polo shirt
Piqué fabric
Piqué type (single or double), GSM (usually 200–240) and composition. Ask for shrinkage results, piqué can shrink more than jersey.
Collar and sleeve bands
Flat-knit or self-fabric, collar height at centre back, tipping colours if any.
Placket
Length, width, number of buttons, button size (e.g. 15L) and whether the placket is fused.
Side vents and hem
Vent length, whether the back is longer than the front (tennis tail), and hem finish.

Common mistakes
- No spec for the collar, so it curls after washing.
- Button size and colour left open, so each sample comes with different buttons.
- Placket length not graded, which looks wrong on larger sizes.
Questions
- What GSM is a good polo shirt?
- Most quality polos use 200–240 GSM cotton piqué. Lighter piqué feels thin; heavier piqué is warmer and more structured.
- Do I need flat-knit collars?
- Flat-knit collars hold their shape best and are standard for polos. Self-fabric collars are cheaper but tend to curl.
